another day
fuck resolutions, new starts, etc. its enough to have to remember the new digit in the year on the rent checks.
i "celebrated" by turning off the tv and watching movies with a friend.
atonement was great and really unexpected since i had no idea what it was about - it was on a list of movies to watch out for from my brother. the acting was all great, the plot interesting and probably the only legitimate use of non-linear story telling i've seen in a long time.
next up, to cleanse the palate, was ricky gervais' new stand up dvd Fame. i loved Animals and Politics but this one was about 20% new stuff (which was brilliant) and the rest jokes we heard before from american comedians decades ago. i mean come on ruminations on "going commando"? jesus, that was old when friends did it a decade ago. and a hell of a lot of incomprehensible english-only stuff about obscure "famous" people. the jokes were meaningless to me and believe me i watch a lot of british television. but when he hit it was hillarious as ever.
charlie wilson's war next. i really like this movie for some reason. a lot of anachronistic stuff (it supposedly took place in the ealry 1980's) but i think it worked here as seeing all those funny clothes and bad hair would have taken us out of it. tom hanks was good and so was that fat guy in every movie these days. and really everyone else was too. i thought i knew about the events of the russian/afghan war but i guess i didn't. giulianni gets a name check as an over zelous prosecutor (name only) which i don't think was necessary given the time. even though it was true it felt out of place
the gay guys down stairs were oddly quiet this year which i guess means they went somewhere else for new years celebrations this year.
by the time CWW was over the ball had long dropped.
